In August 2021, the Perrier-Jouet Champagne House introduced Perrier-Jouet Blanc de Blanc to the Kazakhstani market.
Blanc de Blanc is a separate category of wine, with its own fans and ardent followers.
Sommeliers like to sell it in restaurants and keep it in their private collections.
Almost always Blanc de Blanc will cost 1,5-2 times more than a base champagne ensuring. It is a really niche product that professionals or versed amateurs would probably like, because this wine is well-articulated and fine enough to evaluate it without preparation.
Here we will answer the most popular questions about the Champagne and the Blanc de Blanc to build your confidence both in a small talk and in professional tasting.
What kind of grapes is the Blanc de Blanc made from?
Unlike most champagne wines, which are mostly made from a mixture of Pinot Noir, Pinot Mennier and Chardonnay, Blanc de Blanc is made entirely from white grapes. Elegant, flexible and sometimes even a little tart, this special and refined wine is incredibly gastronomic and will make a good match for almost any dish.
Where are the grapes grown for Blanc de Blanc?
Côte des Blancs and Côte de Sézanne are two subregions where the best Chardonnay is grown.
Côte des Blancs is best known for its six villages: Avize, Chouilly, Cramant, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Oger and Oiry. It was in Kraman where we placed our Champagne House Perrier-Jouet vineyards.
In Champagne, unlike in Burgundy, the Grand Cru classification is related to villages rather than vineyards. Grand Cru means not only grapes of the highest quality, but also that it is sold at the highest price.
What does Blanc de Blanc champagne taste like?
Some Blanc de Blanc will be delicate with a mineral character, while others will have a lush, creamy texture. These differences are related to terroir: cooler climates produce more acidic wines.
Pale gold with hints of green, Perrier-Jouët Blanc de Blancs awakens the senses with a seductive aroma of hedge flowers – elderberry, acacia and honeysuckle – and tangy citrus. When tasting it, its mineral freshness turns into a surprisingly smooth, soft aftertaste that adds charm to this deliciously lively, sparkling champagne.
How much sugar is in Blanc de Blanc?
Brut Nature, the driest designation for the driest wine, can contain up to three grams of sugar per liter without any added.
Extra Brut, which is next in dryness, can contain no more than six grams, and wine labeled Brut can contain up to 12 grams.
Perrier-Jouët Blanc de Blancs contains eight grams of sugar per liter and is classified as Brut.
The history of Perrier-Jouet Blanc de Blanc’s creation
Having created the vintage Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque Blanc de Blancs, the master of the cellar, Hervé Deschamp, certainly wanted to complement the classical collection of cuves from one variety of grapes, which was destined to become a permanent expression of the House’s highest skill. Indeed, by creating Perrier-Jouët Blanc de Blancs, Maison Perrier-Jouët continued a tradition dating back to the beginning of the 20th century – the first cuves from the Schwarton were introduced for the first time in the 1920s, long before such Champagne became known as Blancs de Blancs.
To create the Perrier-Jouët Blanc de Blancs, Hervé Deschamp mixes the Chardonnay grapes, selected from several of the region’s best terroirs, with a small share of reserve wines to ensure absolute concordance of style and a quality.
After three years of maturing the sediments in the wine cellars, the Perrier-Jouët cuvee, filled with freshness and vitality, is ready for release.
